If you are starting NEET preparation, the first thing to understand is the NEET UG exam pattern and marking scheme. Once you know exactly how 720 marks are distributed and what a wrong answer costs, you can decide how much time each subject deserves and how many questions are worth attempting.
The standard NEET UG pattern at a glance
In the standard pattern, the paper has 180 questions to be solved in 3 hours, and the total is 720 marks. The syllabus is based on NCERT Physics, Chemistry and Biology of Classes 11 and 12.
| Subject | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| Physics | 45 | 180 |
| Chemistry | 45 | 180 |
| Botany | 45 | 180 |
| Zoology | 45 | 180 |
| Total | 180 | 720 |
Biology (Botany plus Zoology) is 90 questions, which means half of the paper, 360 marks, is Biology. That single fact should shape your whole preparation.
The marking scheme: +4, -1, 0
- Correct answer: +4 marks
- Incorrect answer: -1 mark
- Unattempted: 0 marks
Each question has four options with a single correct answer. A wrong answer does not just fail to give you 4 marks, it takes 1 away. So the real gap between a correct and a wrong answer on the same question is 5 marks.
Marks maths: what your attempts really give you
Let us work out a few sample situations. The formula is simple: Score = 4 x correct - 1 x wrong.
| Attempted | Correct | Wrong | Score |
|---|---|---|---|
| 180 | 180 | 0 | 720 |
| 180 | 150 | 30 | 600 - 30 = 570 |
| 160 | 140 | 20 | 560 - 20 = 540 |
| 150 | 130 | 20 | 520 - 20 = 500 |
| 180 | 120 | 60 | 480 - 60 = 420 |
Look at the last two rows. The student who attempted 150 questions and got 130 right scored more than the student who attempted all 180 and got only 120 right. Guessing blindly on 30 extra questions added 60 wrong answers' worth of damage. Accuracy beats volume.
What the pattern means for your preparation
Biology is the biggest lever
With 360 marks in Biology, a strong NCERT-based Biology score gives you a base that Physics and Chemistry then build on. Biology questions are largely direct, statement-based and NCERT-driven, so they reward careful reading far more than speed in calculation. Our Biology strategy covers how to do this line by line.
Physics and Chemistry decide the spread
Physics has calculation-heavy questions and Chemistry mixes numericals, reactions and NCERT facts. Most students lose marks here through time pressure and silly errors rather than lack of knowledge. Equal 180-mark weight means neglecting either one is expensive.
Not all chapters carry equal weight
Within 180 marks per subject, certain chapters appear more often than others. Studying the chapter-wise weightage helps you decide where to spend your first revision cycles.
A simple way to plan your attempts in the exam hall
- Round one: Solve every question you are sure about. Mark doubtful ones and move on.
- Round two: Return to doubtful questions and try elimination. Attempt only if you can narrow to two options with a reason.
- Round three: Leave the genuinely unknown questions unattempted unless you have a clear risk plan.
Three hours for 180 questions is an average of 1 minute per question. Biology questions usually take less than that, which creates time for the longer Physics and Chemistry calculations. Practise this split in mock tests, and use our target score planner to convert a goal score into attempts and accuracy.
Common mistakes students make with the pattern
- Treating all 180 questions as compulsory to attempt in a rush, which raises wrong answers.
- Ignoring Biology until late, even though it is half the paper.
- Not calculating the score impact of negative marking until the first mock test.
- Reading the pattern once and never rehearsing it in timed practice.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many marks is NEET UG out of?
In the standard pattern, NEET UG is out of 720 marks from 180 questions. Each correct answer gives 4 marks.
Is there negative marking in NEET UG?
Yes. One mark is deducted for every incorrect answer, while unattempted questions carry zero marks.
How many questions are there in each subject?
The standard pattern has 45 questions each in Physics and Chemistry, and 90 in Biology, split as 45 Botany and 45 Zoology.
How much time do I get for the NEET paper?
The standard pattern gives 3 hours for the full paper. Confirm the exact timing and any changes in the official NTA information bulletin.
Should I attempt all 180 questions?
Not automatically. Attempt every question you can answer or confidently narrow down, because wrong answers cost 1 mark each and a correct one earns 4.
