NEET Biology Preparation Strategy: NCERT First
A NEET Biology preparation strategy for the 360-mark section: read NCERT line by line, master diagrams and tables, and revise with PYQs and a mistake log.

A good NEET Biology preparation strategy starts from one fact: Biology is 90 of the 180 questions, which is 360 of 720 marks. It is also the most NCERT-driven subject, so the way you read the textbook decides your score more than which extra books you buy.
Method 1: Read NCERT line by line, with a pencil
Do not read NCERT like a story. Read it like a list of testable facts.
- First pass (understanding): read one section and understand the idea without marking anything.
- Second pass (marking): underline every fact, number, name, example and exception. Circle any word that looks like a term.
- Third pass (testing): close the book and write what you remember. Check and correct.
Pay special attention to bold terms, box items, figure captions, summary pages and examples written in small text. These are favourite sources of questions.
Turn lines into questions
For each underlined line, ask: if NEET asked this, how would they twist it? For example, if NCERT says a structure is present in one group but absent in another, the question will ask which group lacks it. That habit makes you read exceptions carefully.
Method 2: Diagrams, redrawn from memory
Biology diagrams are not decoration. Questions ask about labelled parts, sequences and positions. Pick 3 to 4 diagrams every study session and redraw them from memory, then compare with NCERT.
Method 3: Tables for anything that is compared
Biology is full of comparisons: mitosis and meiosis, C3 and C4 plants, DNA and RNA, arteries and veins, and many more. Make one clean comparison table per topic.
| Feature | Mitosis | Meiosis |
|---|---|---|
| Daughter cells | 2 | 4 |
| Chromosome number | Same as parent | Halved |
| Crossing over | Absent | Present in prophase I |
| Occurs in | Somatic cells | Germ cells |
A table like this lets you answer "which statement is incorrect" questions in seconds. For a complete method, see our NCERT diagrams and tables guide.
Botany vs Zoology: a simple division
Both halves carry 45 questions in the standard pattern. A workable split of study time:
- Botany: plant physiology and genetics-related chapters need concept clarity. Morphology, anatomy and classification need repetition and tables.
- Zoology: human physiology needs flow-charts, such as how a signal or substance travels through organs. Animal kingdom and structural organisation need tables and exceptions.
- Both: genetics, molecular biology, biotechnology and ecology reward understanding plus exact NCERT terms.
Method 4: Solve PYQs after each chapter
The best test of your NCERT reading is previous year questions. Solve the questions of a chapter right after you finish it in Edurack PYQ practice. Wrong answers show which lines you under-read. Add these lines to a mistake log with the fact, the reason for error and the corrected line.
Prioritise which chapters to revisit using chapter-wise weightage and the most repeated topics. These pages show which areas have appeared more frequently so you can revise them additional times.
A weekly Biology schedule
| Day | Task |
|---|---|
| Mon | New chapter, first pass and second pass |
| Tue | Same chapter: diagrams and table |
| Wed | Chapter PYQs and mistake log |
| Thu | New chapter, first pass and second pass |
| Fri | Same chapter: diagrams and table, PYQs |
| Sat | Revision of the week, 45-question Biology test |
| Sun | Review mistake log and old tables |
Common Biology mistakes
- Reading too fast. Biology marks come from exact words, so slow down.
- Skipping figures and captions. They are part of NCERT.
- Not revising. Biology fades quickly, so plan repeated revision.
- Memorising without understanding. Physiology processes make sense as sequences, and sequences are easier to recall.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many times should I read NCERT Biology for NEET?
At least three to four complete readings is a common target, but each reading should be different: first for understanding, then for marking and finally for testing.
Is NCERT enough for NEET Biology?
NCERT is the main source of the questions. Use other material only to clarify concepts, and always cross-check facts against NCERT.
How do I remember so many facts in Biology?
Use tables, diagrams, flowcharts and spaced revision. Test yourself by writing from memory instead of re-reading.
Should I start with Botany or Zoology?
Either works. Follow your school order and keep daily time for both so neither is left behind.
How many Biology questions can I realistically solve per day?
Start with one chapter's PYQs per day, then increase as your accuracy improves. Review your wrong answers every time.
