JEE Main Chapter-Wise Weightage 2022–2026: What to Study First
We counted 9,048 JEE Main questions across 2022–2026, all shifts. Here are the 54 chapters still in the syllabus, ranked by how much of the paper they carried recently, plus the 11 that have dropped out.

JEE Main is a 75-question paper, but the syllabus is enormous. Studying every chapter with equal energy is the slowest way to prepare. This guide uses five years of previous-year data to show which chapters actually carry the paper, so you can decide what to study first and what can wait.
How we counted
We tagged every JEE Main question from 2022 to 2026, across all shifts and sessions, to its chapter. That gives 9,048 questions across Physics, Chemistry and Maths: 2,905 in Physics, 2,932 in Chemistry and 3,211 in Maths.
The 15 heaviest chapters right now
Each subject carries equal marks, so we rank chapters by their share of the whole paper in 2024–2026, among chapters still in the syllabus.
| # | Chapter | Subject | Total Qs | Paper share | Momentum |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Co-ordinate Geometry | Mathematics | 409 | 4.5% | Stable |
| 2 | Integral Calculus | Mathematics | 337 | 3.7% | Stable |
| 3 | Optics | Physics | 249 | 3.4% | Gaining |
| 4 | Limit, Continuity and Differentiability | Mathematics | 323 | 3.0% | Fading |
| 5 | Electrostatics | Physics | 227 | 2.8% | Stable |
| 6 | Properties of Solids and Liquids | Physics | 224 | 2.8% | Stable |
| 7 | Coordination Compounds | Chemistry | 184 | 2.6% | Gaining |
| 8 | Organic Compounds Containing Oxygen | Chemistry | 223 | 2.5% | Fading |
| 9 | Complex Numbers and Quadratic Equations | Mathematics | 231 | 2.4% | Stable |
| 10 | Three Dimensional Geometry | Mathematics | 226 | 2.4% | Stable |
| 11 | Sets, Relations and Functions | Mathematics | 187 | 2.4% | Gaining |
| 12 | Matrices and Determinants | Mathematics | 225 | 2.3% | Stable |
| 13 | Sequence and Series | Mathematics | 196 | 2.3% | Gaining |
| 14 | Redox Reactions and Electrochemistry | Chemistry | 161 | 2.3% | Stable |
| 15 | Statistics and Probability | Mathematics | 204 | 2.1% | Stable |
Notice how much Maths dominates the top of this list. Chapters such as Co-ordinate Geometry, Integral Calculus and Optics each carry a bigger slice of the paper than almost any single Physics or Chemistry chapter. That is because Maths has fewer chapters to spread its questions across.
What "momentum" means
We compare a chapter's average share of its subject in 2022–23 with 2024–26.
- Gaining: noticeably bigger share in recent papers. Currently: Optics, Rotational Motion, Physics and Measurement, Coordination Compounds, Some Basic Principles of Organic Chemistry, Classification of Elements and Periodicity, Sets, Relations and Functions, Sequence and Series and Vector Algebra.
- Stable: roughly the same weight year after year. Most chapters fall here.
- Fading: clearly smaller share recently. Currently: Oscillations and Waves, Laws of Motion, Gravitation, Electromagnetic Waves, Organic Compounds Containing Oxygen, Limit, Continuity and Differentiability and Trigonometry.
Chapters no longer in the syllabus
11 chapters that appeared in earlier years are not in NTA's JEE Main 2026 syllabus, including Mathematical Reasoning, General Principles and Processes of Isolation of Metals, States of Matter and Environmental Chemistry. Their older questions still exist in the 2022–24 papers, so be careful when you practise previous-year questions: skip the dropped chapters rather than spending time on them. Our full list of dropped chapters has the details.
How to use this list
- Start with the top 15 above and make sure each is solid.
- Give "Stable" chapters regular revision.
- Treat low-weight chapters as quick wins: finish them fast, revise often, and move on.
- For every chapter, solve previous-year questions so you see how it is actually tested.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which chapters have the highest weightage in JEE Main?
By share of the whole paper in 2024–2026, the top three are Co-ordinate Geometry (Mathematics), Integral Calculus (Mathematics) and Optics (Physics).
How many questions are in this analysis?
9,048 questions across 2022–2026 and all shifts. That is much larger than one paper because every shift is counted.
Can I skip low-weightage chapters?
Not entirely. A chapter with a low share can still give you two or three questions in your own shift. Study them last and keep them short, but do not drop them.
Does a high-weightage chapter guarantee questions next year?
No. Weightage is a trend guide based on past papers, not a promise.
