Every year, students lose hours preparing chapters that are no longer examined. For JEE Main, our five-year analysis shows 11 chapters that were asked between 2022 and 2024 but are not in NTA's JEE Main 2026 syllabus.
The full list
| Chapter | Subject | Questions 2022–23 | Questions 2024–26 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mathematical Reasoning | Mathematics | 46 | 20 |
| General Principles and Processes of Isolation of Metals | Chemistry | 51 | 0 |
| States of Matter | Chemistry | 51 | 0 |
| Environmental Chemistry | Chemistry | 44 | 0 |
| Surface Chemistry | Chemistry | 43 | 0 |
| Communication Systems | Physics | 41 | 0 |
| Hydrogen | Chemistry | 41 | 0 |
| s-Block Elements | Chemistry | 40 | 0 |
| Polymers | Chemistry | 32 | 0 |
| Chemistry in Everyday Life | Chemistry | 31 | 0 |
| Mathematical Induction | Mathematics | 0 | 6 |
Most of these chapters carried between 30 and 50 questions in 2022–23 alone, which is why they still show up when you practise previous-year questions.
Why this matters for PYQ practice
If you solve older papers chapter by chapter, you will meet questions from these topics. Two simple rules:
- Filter by chapter first. Practise only the chapters in the current syllabus.
- When solving full old papers, skip questions from dropped chapters instead of counting them against your score.
Dropped chapters by subject
- Physics: Communication Systems
- Chemistry: General Principles and Processes of Isolation of Metals, States of Matter, Environmental Chemistry, Surface Chemistry, Hydrogen, s-Block Elements, Polymers and Chemistry in Everyday Life
- Mathematics: Mathematical Reasoning and Mathematical Induction
What replaces them?
The paper still has 25 scored questions per subject, so the weight of the remaining chapters has gone up. That is why several chapters in the chapter-wise weightage tables show a larger share in 2024–26 than before. Use the "momentum" column to see which ones.
