JEE Main Paper 1 has 75 questions in 3 hours: 25 per subject, split into 20 multiple-choice and 5 numerical. That is 2.4 minutes per question on average. The skill is not speed. It is deciding where your minutes go.
A starting budget
This is a template. Adjust it after your own mock results.
| Block | Suggested time | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Physics | 55 min | Numericals take longer; keep a minute per formula check |
| Chemistry | 45 min | Quickest per question; bank time here |
| Maths | 65 min | Longest calculations; protect this block |
| Review | 15 min | Only for questions you flagged |
The three-pass method
- Pass 1 (about 60% of the time): solve everything you can do in under two minutes. Skip anything that needs a long set-up.
- Pass 2: return to the medium questions.
- Pass 3: use the last minutes for the hard ones and for rechecking.
Habits that save minutes
- Do not read answer options first on numericals.
- Flag and move instead of staring. A flagged question costs five seconds. A stuck question costs five minutes.
- Write less on rough work. Clear, short steps reduce arithmetic errors.
- Stop at your time cap. If a question has taken three minutes, leave it.
Prepare the skill
Timed chapter-wise sets build speed. Solve 20 questions in a fixed time, then review. See our guide on using PYQs well.
