Physics is the subject where JEE Main spreads its questions most evenly: Optics leads, but no single chapter dominates. That makes ordering your preparation by data even more useful.
Physics at a glance
- 2,905 Physics questions counted across 2022–2026, all shifts
- 20 chapters in the current syllabus, plus 1 that have been dropped
- Top three in 2024–2026: Optics (10.1%), Properties of Solids and Liquids (8.5%) and Electrostatics (8.3%)

A three-tier plan for Physics
Tier 1: study first
Optics, Properties of Solids and Liquids, Electrostatics, Magnetic Effects of Current and Magnetism, Current Electricity, Electromagnetic Induction and Alternating Currents and Rotational Motion. Together these carry the largest slice of recent Physics papers. Aim to finish them with full question practice before touching anything else.
Tier 2: core revision
Atoms and Nuclei, Kinematics, Physics and Measurement, Oscillations and Waves, Dual Nature of Matter and Radiation and Electronic Devices. Steady contributors. Revise them on a regular cycle.
Tier 3: cover after the core
Thermodynamics, Laws of Motion, Work, Energy and Power, Kinetic Theory of Gases, Gravitation, Electromagnetic Waves and Experimental Skills. Lower recent weight, but not zero. Learn the high-yield ideas and keep revision short.
Dropped chapters
NTA's JEE Main 2026 syllabus no longer includes Communication Systems. If you see them in older papers, skip them.
Chapters gaining weight
Optics, Rotational Motion and Physics and Measurement took a bigger share of the Physics paper in 2024–26 than in 2022–23.
Chapters losing weight
Oscillations and Waves, Laws of Motion, Gravitation and Electromagnetic Waves have been asked less often recently. Do not skip them, but they need not be your first priority.
